On May 16th, 2015 Verizon employees Michelle B. Dutton and Denice C. Ware, both members of the Central Jersey Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., hosted a Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) event for their local Betty Shabazz Delta Academy at Verizon Headquarters in Basking Ridge, NJ. Delta Academy provides enrichment opportunities and educational enhancement to augment scholarship in math, science, and technology with a goal of preparing young girls for leadership in the 21st century. Verizon Foundation’s mission is to use technology to solve problems in education, healthcare and energy management and sponsors educational programs focused on increasing student interest and achievement in science, technology, engineering and math especially in underserved areas.
As a mother involved with her daughters’ educations serving on Pike School’s Parents Association board and as a financial advisor to women in transition , Susan Wilson has come to know a lot of great women. Ware said Verizon has moved toward "just in time" employment, meaning it needs to get new workers up to speed quickly. She said the company depends on employees coming to them with relevant training, especially high-level computer literacy and knowledge of specific technologies. See more.
